Birth Trauma - EMDR

Birth trauma can manifest in various forms, ranging from physical injuries to emotional distress. For some individuals, traumatic childbirth experiences may include emergency caesarean sections, prolonged labor, medical complications, or feelings of powerlessness and lack of control during the birth process. These experiences can leave a lasting impact, leading to symptoms such as, but not limited to:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Flashbacks

  • Nightmares

  • Difficulties bonding with the baby

  • Panic

  • Feeling detached from oneself

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and is a recommended treatment approach for birth trauma, along with trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, to assist in processing distressing symptoms associated with trauma. It is based on the idea that an individual's symptoms (e.g., anxiety) result from the brain not fully processing distressing experiences. While historically used to treat PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), EMDR is now recognized as a successful approach for treating a range of challenges.
