What is EMDR - EMDR Counselling & Therapy Geelong

EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing was developed in the late 1980s by Francine Shapiro, it is now widely used around the world as a therapeutic approach to various presentations.

How Does EMDR Work?

At its core, EMDR therapy operates on the principle that traumatic memories, negative beliefs, and distressing emotions are stored in the brain in a fragmented manner. These fragmented memories can continue to exert a powerful influence on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors long after the traumatic event has passed.

During an EMDR session, the therapist guides the client through a series of bilateral stimulation techniques, such as following the therapist's hand movements with their eyes or listening to auditory tones alternating from left to right. These bilateral stimulations facilitate the integration of fragmented memories and promoting adaptive resolution.

The Eight Phases of EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy typically consists of eight distinct phases:

  1. History Taking and Treatment Planning: The therapist gathers information about the client's history, identifies target memories, and develops a treatment plan.

  2. Preparation: The therapist explains the EMDR process to the client, teaches relaxation techniques, and ensures the client feels safe and supported.

  3. Assessment: The client identifies the negative beliefs, emotions, and physical sensations associated with the target memory.

  4. Desensitisation: The client holds the target memory in mind while engaging in bilateral stimulation, allowing the memory to become less distressing over time.

  5. Installation: Positive beliefs and emotions are strengthened to replace the negative ones associated with the target memory.

  6. Body Scan: The client checks for any remaining physical tension or discomfort associated with the memory.

  7. Closure: The session is concluded, and the client is provided with strategies for self-soothing and coping between sessions.

  8. Reevaluation: Subsequent sessions may involve reevaluating progress and addressing any residual issues.
